D’Banj has been appointed present of Island Def Jam
Daniel Dapo Oyebanjo, aka D’Banj, has just been appointed president of Island Def Jam, an international music conglomerate, in Africa.
The elected president of Mo’Hits Records said that the appointment is in line with his plan to open up the African music scene to the rest of the world. He said, “When I told a group of journalists in Nigeria, after winning the MTV Europe Music Awards (Best African Act) in Munich in 2007, that my ambition was to open up the young and vibrant African music scene to the rest of the world and become the youngest African music mogul, this was what I had in mind.
“This is the time for my people, especially fellow Nigerians, to give me their support. I need every support I can get and I’m open to suggestions. Let it be known that this is not about D’Banj, but letting the rest of the world know that entertainment is Africa.
“I’m urging every African to support this dream because nobody can stop us but us. We can’t lose for trying. No more excuses of not getting recognition from the Grammy Awards organisers. If there’s Grammy Latin, surely, there will be Grammy Africa. That’s our goal.
“As Africans we have got the talent to compete with the best in the world. And that’s what we intend to showcase and achieve with the formation of Island Def Jam Africa.”
Island (Records) oversees the European market, while Def Jam takes care of the American market. The Island Def Jam in Africa is one of the leading five records companies in the world.
