A section of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH,  Idi-Araba in Lagos State went up in flame yesterday evening throwing Management and patients on admission into panic. The fire which LEADERSHIP learnt started around 7.30 pm was said to have been caused by an electrical spark in one of the clinic where those receiving treatment on HIV/AIDS were being treated. Most of the patients were successfully evacuated by sympathisers and those within the premises when the fire broke out. An eye witness, Mr. Adelowo Olawale told LEADERSHIP that the fire started around 7.30 pm and that no casualty was recorded.

An early morning inferno, yesterday, gutted two rooms at the palace of the Emir of Katsina  with items worth millions of naira including jewelries allegedly destroyed. It was gathered that the fire occurred around 3:15 am and lasted hours as it was finally put off around 6 am by the men of state fire service. Unconfirmed sources said the fire incidence which occurred as a result of electrical fault gutted two rooms believed to be rooms of the emir’s wives. Although the emirate council declined to comment on the matter, it could not be said if the wives were present in the room when the disaster occurred. However, there are no reported cases of human casualty. Ten passengers of a commercial bus died on Tuesday at Obada-Oko in Ogun when their bus collided with an articulated vehicle. Mr Fatai Bakare, the Itori Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, said the accident occurred along the Abeokuta-Lagos expressway at about 12 midnight, adding that 11 people were involved.           Bakare gave the registration number of the bus as LAGOS CZ 269 MUS, while the articulated vehicle was marked LAGOS 208 XB. “All the deceased had been deposited at Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta and Ifo General Hospital. The only survivor is critically injured and receiving treatment at FMC. “Again we have to say it that it is very important for motorists to keep to their lane while on the highway to forestall future occurrence of this type of situation,'' he said. An Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday sentenced a 28-year-old man, Sunday Eze, to 14 months imprisonment for attacking one Mr Izuchukwu Okafor with a broken bottle. Magistrate T.O Shomade also sentenced Eze of No. 11 Omotosho St., Sabo, Ajangbadi, Lagos, for stealing N6,000 and a telephone handset belonging to the complainant. Shomade, however, gave the convict an option of N100,000 fine. The convict was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and causing body harm and he pleaded guilty. The prosecutor, Mr Friday Eze, told the court that the convict had on Aug. 18, at about 9.40 p.m. at Ulom Bus Stop, Ajangbadi, Lagos, demanded for money from the complainant, which he declined to give. Eze said that the convict in the process attacked Okafor, who was alighting from a motorcycle with a broken bottle and hit him on the head, dispossessed him of the sum of N6,000 and a telephone handset. Researchers fear it could be triggering the early onset of puberty, leading to a diminished ability to reproduce - particularly in women. Experts say that there is still much to learn about the effects of obesity and puberty, as well as its effects on the liver, pancreas and other endocrine glands. But in general puberty is starting earlier in girls and the problem is accelerating, reports journal Frontiers in Enocrinology. The Senate yesterday faulted the new Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) currency policy and consequently asked it to stop the plan to introduce the N5,000 note immediately. The Senate also warned that no such policy that has far reaching implication on the people must be embarked on without its knowledge of and other stakeholders, adding that ‘until this is done the CBN’ must stop action. Senate handed down the order through its Chairman, Senate Committee on Banking, Currency, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, Senator Bassey Otu (Cross Rivers, South). Addressing a press conference in Abuja, he informed that the Senate was sending a letter to CBN to stop all further actions on printing of the new N5,000 note until the Senate of the Federal Republic was properly briefed. The new policy, he added, was scary and would send wrong signals to both the domestic and international business community. The deluge of floods ravaging several areas in the country has been worsened by the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in northern Cameroun at the weekend submerging several settlements in the riverine areas of eleven local governments of Adamawa State, killing at least three people and displacing thousands of families. Many more were reportedly missing. Worst-hit areas are in Fufore, Girei, Yola South, Yola North, Demsa, Numan, Lamorde, Shelleng, Michika, Guyuk and Ganye local governments.
