Rape of schoolgirls: Police arrest driver, 4 suspects

Ogun State Police Command yesterday said it had arrested the driver of the luxury bus with Lagos State registration number XW 875 LSR in which 41 schoolgirls travelling to Lagos were allegedly raped last Saturday.
The girls, in their teens, included JSS 1 and 2 as well as SSS 1 and 2 classes of a Catholic School, who were travelling from Enugu to Lagos for the Easter celebrations.

The ugly development also led to protests by parents and guardians of the girls who lamented what happened to their children/wards.
Also arrested were four other suspected rapists, said to have defiled the school girls after their luxury bus broke down in Ogbere axis of Ijebu East Local Government Area of the state.

The new development came barely twenty-four hours after the state police command had denied any report of rape during the last Saturday’s robbery incident, even though it confirmed that a luxury bus conveying the girls was waylaid.
In a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, yesterday, the Police named the four suspects to include Oni Olopari, Innocent Omule, Gbenga Adebayo and Samuel Luca.

According to him, the driver of the luxury bus, who was arrested late Monday assisted the police in their investigations.
He added that it was the driver that later identified Samuel Luca as one of the robbers who attacked the bus during their investigations early yesterday.
Adejobi who assured that police would leave no stone unturned, also disclosed that the suspected rapists were arrested at Ijebu Ife/Mushin area of the state with some items like furniture found in a broken-down vehicle.
