Beating stepdaughter with pestle? He must be insane

A 54-year-old man, Godwin Essien, who allegedly battered his 18-year-old stepdaughter, Blessing Irebeh, with a pestle has been arrested by the police.

Irebeh, whose head was dripping with blood after her stepfather beat her on Saturday, reported the case at the Oja Oba Police Division.

Residents were seen talking about the incident, which occurred at 17, Fagbewesa Street, Osogbo, in hushed tones, when the police came to whisk Essien away.

It was gathered that Irebeh, who lived in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with a relative had travelled to Osogbo to see her mother over the weekend.
However, the stepfather was angry that Irebeh travelled to Osogbo without taking permission from her relative in Abeokuta and resorted to beating her with a pestle.

When Irebeh’s head became bloodied as a result of the beating, some neighbours told her to seek redress by reporting the case to the police.

She subsequently went to the police station, and reported the incident.

The action of the stepfather did not go down well with his Irebeh’s mother, who faulted the battering of her daughter.

A police officer at the station, who craved anonymity, told our correspondent on Sunday that Essien was still being held at the station.
