No fewer than 52 people lost their lives in roads accidents across Anambra, Bauchi and Katsina states yesterday. In what could be termed black Thursday, Bauchi recorded 32 deaths, Anambra 18 while two persons died in Katsina. The Bauchi road accident occurred along Bauchi/Kano road, a few kilometers from Azare town.

The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for Bauchi, Mr. Zakariyya Mamman, confirmed the crash to reporters yesterday. Mamman said the accident involved two Yobe Line buses, which collided and went up in flames, killing all the occupants.
He said 23 male and nine female passengers were involved, adding that his officers were making effort to evacuate their bodies to Azare General Hospital.

The FRSC sector commander said one of the buses was coming from Damaturu and heading for Kaduna while the other one was coming from Kano to Potiskum.
He said the accident was caused by over-speeding and failure of the drivers to observe traffic regulations.
Also, at the foot of the Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, a truck carrying two 40-ft containers lost control and crushed 18 people in the early hours of yesterday.

Our reporter, who visited the scene at 7.10a.m, observed that the multiple accidents occurred when some street urchins, allegedly collecting emblem fees for the state government, accosted the truck marked XM 858 MUS, which led to the driver losing control. The emblem officials, it was learnt, tried to use wood with nails to deflate the truck’s tyres when the driver, who wanted to dodge them, lost control of the vehicle and rammed into other vehicles.

Seven vehicles were affected in the accident among which four were commercial buses and three private vehicles, heading for Asaba. Some of them were crushed beyond recognition. Meanwhile, two female councillors in Mayhama and Kalgo Local Government Areas of Kebbi State were confirmed dead yesterday in motor accident along Funtuwa Road, Katsina State. Another female passenger in the car was said to have developed multiple injuries and rushed to a hospital.
