Calabar Festival: How Nigerian, American gospel singers thrilled audience

The atmosphere looked charged as melodious American and Nigerian gospel singers took centre stage on Sunday night, December 18, 2011 at the U.J Esuene Stadium, Calabar, Cross River State. They were thrilling thousands of gospel lovers, who trooped in to listen and have a glance of world-leading spiritual musicians at the 2011 Calabar Festival.

 Present at the spiritual event, tagged Canaan Praise Night 3, were American Grammy and Dove-winning gospel singer, record producer, actress and radio host, Yolanda Adams, American pastor and Christian worship music producer, Don Moen, and Jamaican-born reggae gospel singer, Chevelle Franklyn. Angie Stone had performed at Canaan Praise Nights 1 and 2.

 Adams, whose performance capped activities for the night, ministered to the souls of the audience, who had waited all night for her performance with powerful worship songs. Just before Adams, popular Nigerian musician, Obiwon, had the atmosphere charged. Others who performed were Murphy, Rasine Brown and Pastor Chichi Ayodele.
 The climax of the night was the emergence of St. Cecilia Mass Choir as the winner in the finals of a keenly contested Voices of Paradise competition duing which they had filled the air in the stadium with angelic melodies.

 The Voices of Paradise competition started on Canaan Praise Night 1 and five choirs had made it to the finals on Canaan Praise Night 3. The five choirs were St. Gregory the Great Choir, St. Bernard’s Parish, Presbyterian Bells, Paradise Chorals and St Cecelia Mass Choir all in Calabar.
 The winners, St. Cecilia, carted home N1million, a key board, mixer and amplifier. Runners-up, Paradise Chorals, won N500, 000, a five-string guitar and a five-piece drum set. First runners-up Presbyterian Bells went home with N250, 000. a cord microphone and speakers while St. Bernard’s Parish and St Gregory the Great emerged fourth and fifth positions respectively and went home with N50, 000 each.
