Love gone sour

L-R: Dean, Linda
Love gone sour
 By Kemi Lawal
When these marriages or relationships were contracted, they seemed like a match made in heaven, especially as some of the ceremonies were characterised by glamour and had in attendance the elite in the society.

No one envisaged that the couples involved would dare look each other in the eye or hum discordant tunes. Some barely lasted a few years, while others lasted upwards of a decade. A number of of the most celebrated union gone sour are examined: Dean Priddy and Linda Edozien

Both light skinned, Dean Priddy and Linda Edozien can easily be labelled silver spoon kids owing to their affluent background. While the former’s father is Olu Priddy who is a big name in real estate as well as the social circuit, the former’s father is Prof. John Edozien.

The duo got married at a fairytale wedding that attracted the presence of many celebrities from all walks of life. The union, which produced a child, began to exhibit some noticeable cracks until the couple finally called it quits and went their separate ways.

Notwithstanding the setback, Linda quickly re-launched herself into the social circles with the opening of her spa in highbrow Lekki.

Tunde and Funmilayo Soleye

Both medical doctors, ladies man Tunde Soleye got married to Funmilayo in 1979. The union which produced three kids is currently troubled, as the duo are engaged in a bitter divorce battle.

The latter, who is known to have dated a number of beautiful ladies in the past, has moved on and is currently married to former beauty queen Nike Oshinowo-Soleye.

In a suit filed at the Lagos High Court, Igbosere, where Funmilayo went to seek divorce, she asked the court to order her husband to give her a lump sum of 250,000 pounds and N75m respectively; plus the title deeds of a property in London, a flat at Gray’s Inn Road for their first daughter. For her son, she wants the court to order her husband to pay a total sum of $276,000 for his university education and maintenance, among other things.

Moses Taiga and Nneka Mercy

Contrary to the popular notion that Olorogun Moses Taiga got married to Nneka Mercy according to local customs, a court of law in Lagos was able to prove otherwise.

There is no denying the fact that they were romantically involved and the dalliance produced a set of twin babies. Taiga, who is married to a mother of quadruplets, Yinka, was engaged in a long battle in court in England and Nigeria before the records were set straight.

Gbenga Obasanjo and Moji Onabanjo

Theirs was one divorce saga that topped the headlines. Gbenga Obasanjo and Moji Onabanjo were wedded in a top-rated ceremony that topped social discourse for a long time because of the level of affluence that was prevalent at the ceremony.

The union fell apart after two kids, with allegations and counter allegations of infidelity making the rounds.

Moji has since remarried, while her former spouse is still single.

Kofi Sagoe and Deola

Celebrated designer Deola Sagoe parted ways with her husband, Kofi Sagoe, over a year ago for reasons only they can reveal. The latter who was an employee in his estranged wife’s father’s company also quit the job (or was he eased out of office like some people speculated?)

The union, blessed with kids, is yet to receive a fresh breath of life till date.

Gbenga Sokefun and Ronke

Entertainment practitioner, Gbenga Sokefun, was a staple on the social scene. A big player in the music industry, it was not out of place to find him at top rate soirees in company with his now estranged wife, Ronke. But all that has been committed to the history books.

Ronke, who is the Group Chief Legal Officer at Oando Plc, and her hubby are no longer in good terms. Reason why both of them have gone low profile, perhaps.

Prince Alvan Akenzua and Omosede Igbinedion

A nephew of the Oba of Benin, Prince Alvan Akenzua exchanged marital vows with buxomly and pretty Omosede Igbinedion, daughter of Chief Gabriel Igbinedion. They were accorded a most befitting wedding that awed most of the guests that were in attendance. A carnival of sorts, not even the fact that the bride’s father and the groom’s uncle were previously at loggerheads could take the shine off the festivities that marked the colourful nuptials.

Already, the barely three-year-old marriage is troubled, just as it is no longer news that the couple are on the verge of getting a divorce. The lawsuit which has already been instituted has been tagged a battle of the titans.
