The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Ogun State chapter, has disagreed with the state government over the commencement of this year’s Junior School Certificate Examination today.

Giving reasons why the examination should not start today, the NAPPS said the general elections and other unforeseen circumstances had affected the current academic session and canvassed that the examination should rather be postponed to a more convenient date. Members of the NAPSS, which held a peaceful protest in Abeokuta last Friday also alleged that the government had levied students in the public secondary schools in the state N100 each for the 2011/2012 academic session. But in a swift reaction, the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Yemi Akinwonmi, faulted the action of the private school proprietors.

In a statement, the government also denied the allegation of N100 payment levied on the school pupils, saying “there is no government circular to the effect and the ministry does not intend to introduce this.” He also added that government had approved a shift in date of the examination as a result of the current misunderstanding.
NAPSS President, Alhaja Basirat Alimi, while briefing journalists on behalf of the protesters, threatened that the association would boycott the examination if the government went ahead with the planned date.

Alimi who said the academic session would end in July also argued that the National Examination Council – Junior School Certificate Examination (NECO- JSCE) clashed with the proposed Ogun State JSCE.“The present academic session had been interrupted by reasons of strike, voters’ registration exercise, the just concluded election and the extended holiday, the scheduled examination, if allowed to commence, implies testing students on the scheme of work yet to be covered by schools in Ogun State.

“Moreso, the released timetable for Ogun State JSC exam is loaded with four subjects starting from 8.00 am through 5.00 pm per day from NECO’s JSCE timetable making a total of six subjects per day for the students.” According to him, the completion of this exam (JSCE) on Friday, May 20, implied that the students would complete the term in the third week instead of 13 weeks thereby giving room to idleness and other anti-social behaviours, stretching till September.”
