The United States yesterday hailed the 2011 General elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as one of unprecedented success noting that it has shown that Nigeria is now prepared to take its deserved pride of place in the international community while its voice will command the respect of a truly democratic power.

The US government also gave thumbs up to the military, the police and other security agencies for ensuring that despite efforts at truncating the electoral process through violence, the security agencies created the enabling environment for Nigerians to perform their civic responsibilities of casting their votes and making sure the votes counted.

United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Terrence Macaulay who made the disclosure while presenting a meritorious award of excellence from President Barak Obama to a Nigerian Navy officer, Commodore Adeniyi Osinowo in Abuja, congratulated all Nigerians for organizing and achieving ‘credible and transparent elections’.

His words, “I have to offer a word as well to an issue that has captured the attention of the world this April and that is in the electoral circle. I have to say congratulations to the Nigerian government, and the people for achieving credible and transparent elections”.

“Really, it is an historic opportunity for Nigeria to consolidate on its democracy and further expand its voice on the world stage. To that, I will add congratulations to the men and women of the Nigerian security services, the Navy, Army, Airforce and Police, for their professional contributions to ensuring that the Nigerian people should go out and vote, and ensure that their votes counted”.

“The world is watching and happy that Nigeria has achieved something historic”, he added.
