Honour my father by fighting poverty, Hafsat Abiola tells Jonathan

Image
Daughter of the late winner of 1993 presidential election, Hafsat Abiola-Costello, has hailed the decision of the federal government to re-name the University of Lagos (UNILAG) after her father but urged the federal government to work more on fighting poverty, as that will be her late father’s utmost desire. Mrs Abiola-Costello and other prominent citizens in Abeokuta, the hometown of the late politician, described President Jonathan’s announcement as a long overdue but welcome development In an interview with journalists in the Ogun state capital, she urged the federal government to give more priority to reduce the prevailing poverty level in the country, than naming schools and roads. “What I want to say to President Jonathan is that what we can do to honour the heroes past is to make sure that they do not die in vain.” According to her, “Nigerian people are still poor, majority of them are poor today, even more so than in 1993 when he (MKO Abiola) won his election and I

It’s arbitrary, an act of disrespect – Soyinka

Image
This is one gift horse which, contrary to traditional saying, must be inspected thoroughly in the mouth. Primary from all of us must be a plea to the MKO Abiola family not to misconstrue the protests against the naming of the University of Lagos after their heroic patriarch. Issues must be separated and understood in their appropriate contexts. The family will acknowledge that, among the loudest opposing voices to Jonathan’s gift horse, are those who have clamoured tirelessly that MKO Abiola, the Nigerian nation’s president-elect, be honoured nationally, and in a befitting manner. Next is my confession to considerable shock that President Goodluck Jonathan did not even think it fit to consult or inform the administrators of the university, including Council and Senate, of his intention to re-name their university for any reason, however laudable. This arbitrariness, this act of disrespect, was a barely tolerated aberration of military governance. It is totally deplorable in wha

We will not allow using universities to score cheap political points - UNILAG ASUU Chairman

Image
In this interview with SEGUN OLUGBILE, Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities at the University of Lagos, Dr. Oghenekaro Ogbinaka, argued that the union was not in support of the authorities’ decision to close down the university What is ASUU’s position on the change of name of the University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University of Lagos? The leadership of ASUU, University of Lagos Branch’s leadership has diligently read the material details of President Goodluck Jonathan’s May 29th speech to the country. Without empathy, we sympathise with a Peoples Democratic Party-led government that has almost nothing to point to – as any achievement of substance of 13 years into our democratic dispensation. In crass demonstration of its continual lack of the feelings of Nigerians at a time that matters most, Jonathan’s PDP-led government has chosen this “moment of bereavement” of the entire UNILAG community to unilaterally announce a change of the institution’s name to the bewilder

UNILAG crisis deepens as they vacates the students from campus

Image
The Senate of the University of Lagos on Wednesday shut down the 50-year-old institution for two weeks and asked the students to vacate the campus latest 11 o’clock in the morning. The closure came on the second day of protest by the students who are against the renaming of the university after the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, MKO Abiola, by President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday. Notwithstanding the closure the students on Wednesday vowed not to leave the campus. The Federal Government has, however, said the decision to rename the university established by an Act of parliament in April 1962 was done in the best interest of the country and that the protest was not a disapproval of the decision to rename UNILAG. The Senate of the University of Lagos on Wednesday shut down the 50-year-old institution for two weeks and asked the students to vacate the campus latest 11 o’clock in the morning. Image
Justin Bieber has a huge mess on his hands. The 18-year-old popstar allegedly attacked a photographer on May 26 while on a date with his girlfriend Selena Gomez. But now that he’s left for Europe, does this mean he’ll avoid being questioned? Raoul Felder tells HollywoodLife.com that the only way Justin will get out of being questioned is if his attorney’s can prove it never happened. But Justin will most likely be questioned by police. “Anytime the police say you need to come in for questioning they usually arrest you when you come in and then you get bailed out,” Raoul says. “They want to hear your side of the story. But very frequently, they arrest you right on the spot.” But now that Justin is in Oslo, Noway, does this mean he’ll get in trouble for fleeing the country? “It’s not a murder case where everyone stops the clock,” Raoul says. “He’ll show up with his lawyer when he’s back and they might arrest him. But it’s a misdemeanor, it’s not a felony. He is working with his

Balogun-Arogunjo, who spoke in Osogbo on Monday, however, thanked the school’s authorities for “ensuring the arrest of the killers.” He added, “The case is now with the police; all I plead for is justice. How can cadets, who are supposed to ensure peace and tranquillity in the institution, turn into killers? “If my son was guilty of any offence, he should have been arrested, prosecuted and not beaten to death. There’s punishment for every offence in the country.” Also, the father of another Mass Communication ND student, Pastor Abiodun Morakinyo, whose son, Oladayo, is still lying critically ill in an undisclosed hospital in Ondo town – after being beaten along with Adeola by the cadets – has called for justice.
