Fresh Borno Attacks, Gunmen Killed 12


Twelve persons were killed in multiple attacks and bomb explosion carried out by unknown gunmen in separate areas of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, yesterday. This was just as the police destroyed 140 explosives in Jos also yesterday.

Among those killed were two of the suspected assailants, having being trailed by operatives of the Joint Military Task Force, (JTF).
This came barely 24 hours after another group of gunmen stormed a local market in Damboa town, administrative headquarters of Damboa Local Government Area and killed 18 hunters.

In the latest attacks, one person was gunned down by two gunmen who invaded London Ciki Ward at about 10.30am, firing several shots into the air before heading to the house of the victim where they shot him at close range.

The identity of the deceased could not be ascertained as at press time even as he was reported to have died on the spot due to excessive bleeding.

Later in the day, heavy explosion was heard in several areas of Maiduguri metropolis as an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off in Kalari Ward. The blast was followed by serious gun battle between some insurgents and JTF personnel which lasted for over an hour. 

Also yesterday, another group of gunmen invaded Jiddari Polo Ward and slaughtered five persons. The incident occurred at about 3.am when the assailants broke into two different compounds and held the victims at gunpoint, before using sharp objects to cut their throats.

The deceased comprised of a director in the Borno state Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries Development, one Mr. Zakka, as well as a middle-aged man and his son.
