Kidnapped Okonjo-Iweala’s Mother Released
The Delta Police command confirmed the release of the 82-year old wife of the traditional ruler of Ogwashi-Uku, in Aniocha South Local Government Area of the state, Prof. Chukwuka Okonjo, on Friday.
The command’s Spokesman, Mr Charles Muka, said in a statement in Asaba, that the woman was released by her abductors in the early hours of Friday.
He, however, could not disclose where she was released.
Muka said that details of how the woman regained her freedom would be released later, saying, “We are still piecing the information together”.
Meanwhile, a statement signed by the Ministers spokesman, Mr Paul Nwabuikwu, on Friday in Abuja said, the "Okonjo family is full of thanks to the Almighty for this happy development.
"The family is also highly appreciative of the support and encouragement of President Goodluck Jonathan.''
The family in the statement also extended thanks to the governors of Delta, Anambra and Rivers, Dr Emmanual Uduagha, Mr Peter Obi and Rotimi Amechi, respectively.
It also thanked all the well-wishers both within and outside the country.
Madam Okonjo was abducted at her home in Ogwashi-Uku, at about 1.30 p.m. by gunmen, who were said to have arrived at the compound in two green-coloured Volkswagen Golf cars. (NAN)
