Send subsidy fund thieves to jail – NLC, others

Nigerians from all walks of life on Thursday asked for the immediate prosecution of individuals and companies involved in the mind-boggling subsidy fraud.

Political parties, workers’ body and eminent lawyers in their reactions to the report of a House of Representatives panel said those found guilty should be jailed to serve as a deterrent to others.

The report, which the committee submitted to the House yesterday, recommends that government agencies and fuel marketers should refund illegal payments totalling N1tn.

Leading the pack is the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, which the panel asked to refund the N310.4bn it fraudulently claimed. The panel also asked the NNPC to refund a total of N285bn claimed for fuel imports above the  Petroleum Product Pricing  and Regulating Agency level and another N108.6bn the corporation paid itself.

National Chairman of opposition Action Congress of Nigeria, Chief Bisi Akande, challenged the Federal Government to ensure that those involved in the fraud were prosecuted and jailed if found guilty.
