How 7 corps members, 13 others perished in auto crash

Iwaraja -Ijesha, a community in Atakumosa West Local Government Area of Osun State, is a sleepy town situated off the Ilesa- Akure Expressway, a few kilometres after Ilesa. But the tragic event of Monday, March 5 brought the community to national consciousness.

It was a terrible day; a day that saw 20 passengers losing their lives in a most gruesome manner in a fatal accident that occurred in the community. Besides the dead, 12 other passengers were also deformed in the crash.

The dead included seven National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) members who were going to their states of national assignment, and a mother killed along with her baby. The corps members had just received their call-up letters from their various institutions before the tragic incident. They were all burnt to death in the crash.

The accident, which occurred at about 12.00noon on the fateful Monday along the popular Ilesa/Akure Expressway was not the first in the history of the road. Indeed, many lives had been lost there to vehicular mishap. Residents of the area said it was regrettable that the federal government had done nothing to minimize road accidents on the busy road which links the South West to the northern parts of the country.
